Vacation in Taipei - Yehliu Geopark

Yehliu Geopark

Yehliu (Chinese野柳pinyinYěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung.

The cape, known by geologists as the Yehliu Promontory, forms part of the Taliao Miocene Formation. It stretches approximately 1,700 meters into the ocean and was formed as geological forces pushed Datun Mountain (大屯山) out of the sea.

Yehliu Geopark is truly a park of natural wonders: rocks carved by wave-cutting and weathering over years and years were formed into shapes resembling figures that are real. The most famous one is of course the Queen’s Head, among other “statues” that are named the Fairy’s Shoe, the Mushroom Rocks, the Tofu Rocks, and the Elephant Rocks, along with many interesting potholes. Do not forget to bring your camera.

To go to Yehliu, head to the Taipei Bus Terminal. You can either use Easy Card or purchase the ticket from the ticketing counter at NTD48 one way. Wait at Jinshan exit.

But there are not express as well because they’ll stop along the way to pick up passengers. After 1 hour 15 minutes or less of the bumpy and hilly ride, we reached a small town and alighted here.

You’ll have to walk for some 10-15 minutes before you see Yehliu Geopark. Along the way, you’ll see a fishing village and lot of seafood restaurants.

Regardless you are a geologist or a lay person, Yehliu Geopark is a must-see wild nature in northern Taiwan! Study explains that the rise of Yehliu promontory was resulted from geological forces pushed Mountain Datun (大屯山) out of the sea. Coupled with weathering, multiple erosion like sun, rain, wind and sea-wave attacks over time, the limestone rock showcases the stunning landscape of hoodo stones. Owing to the wildest human's imagination, these enormous dots on the shoreline are called  mushroom, candle, honeycomb, ginger, chessboard, bean curd, elephant, marine bird and even fairy slipper!
